The Cornerstone Newsletter

I am currently working on another project for St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital. I have been writing and laying out an 8 page, full-color newsletter that will be mailed to hundreds of patients and past and potential donors of the hospital.

This is a page from The Awl, the St. Jospeh's Healthcare System employee newsletter. Half the text on this page is a result of my efforts! They are:

Wayne Today 4/26/12 - Therapy Dog

I liked working on this press release a lot! I got to meet this therapy dog and go around on a visit with him and his very nice owner, Laurie. It was great to see how the patients responded to this little guy. I also learned a lot about therapy dogs in the process! One thing I left out of the article because of space was that this particular dog has hair and not fur which makes him hypoallergenic!

Press Release: St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital Art Show Featured Work of Recovered Stroke Patient

This was the first press release I wrote for St. Joesph's Wayne Hospital. There are a few key differences between writing an article as a reporter and creating a press release that made this an interesting experience. It was very gratifying to see my work published for anyone to read! This is the text that appeared on the St. Joseph's website.

WAYNE, NJ [January 11, 2012] – Recently, over 100 guests gathered at the Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) of St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital (SJWH), a division of St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Wayne, New Jersey, when one of the rooms was transformed into an art show exhibit. Featured was the work of Ralph Arminio, Sr., a Little Falls artist and businessman.

The Arminio family credits Sister Mary Pauline Hogan, SC, Patient Relations Representative, SJWH, for encouraging Mr. Arminio to take up drawing again while he recovered in the hospital following a stroke. His family initially brought a sketchpad and pastels for Mr. Arminio but he was sure he’d never be able to draw or paint again and so the art supplies lay unused in a drawer.

Sister Pauline learned that Mr. Arminio enjoyed classical music and as they bonded over that, she also learned that he was an artist. As his physical and mental recovery progressed, Sister Pauline was able to coax Mr. Arminio into sketching again. Soon, Mr. Arminio was producing landscapes and portraits in his new sketchpad provided by Sister Pauline.

Sister Pauline and Mr. Arminio both noted his improvement and thought his art could inspire the other patients who were also recovering in the ARU.

Sister Pauline worked to put on an art show that would showcase Mr. Arminio’s art, featuring many portraits of film legends, political figures and family members. The art show drew over 100 guests, including patients, visitors and hospital staff.

“Ralph Arminio, Sr. and the Arminio Family would like to thank Sister Mary Pauline Hogan and the staff of St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital for all that they do,” said a letter to the hospital from the Arminio family. “Through this show (patients) saw with their inspiration and efforts, hard work and love that rehabilitation is achieved through physical, mental and spiritual labors.”
